The Power of Pink

The coolest colour to have in your home right now is pink.

Ellie explores this pretty colour and tips on how to use it in your home

It's funny how the colour changes over time. I remember the 80's well and its use of pink in the home, I even had a pink bedroom growing up as a kid. It wasn't overly pink as you might think, but understated, a hint of the colour. My fondest memory of this bedroom was the wallpaper. All white with little pink graphic flowers. But once I hit my teens, it was a colour I came to dislike. Wanting to be unique, I painted my bedroom a soft, sunshine yellow. But I digress...

The word 'pink' entered the English language in the 17th century, possibly from the Dutch flower 'pinken' - a decidedly feminine origin.

Scandinavian design brands have embraced this colour, which may be one reason why we are seeing a resurgence of the colour in our homes. They are making it modern by teaming up blush shades with grey, pale woods and punchier hues such as mustard.

it's a colour for the person who wants a more personal home. It can be very in-your-face or dusty and innocent.

Pink brings a softness and sophistication to an object. It goes very well with darker colours, adding life to an interior. Gentle pinks also have the added advantage of creating a complexion-enhancing glow, particularly when used on walls or as lighting. So think about it why would you not use a colour that enhances our beauty?

Here are 12 tips on bringing this fabulous colour to your home.

1. Go for a pink statement couch.
You don’t have to have an overly-girly home to pick a pink statement couch for your living room. In fact, sometimes a pink sofa works best when it feels completely unexpected, like in a modern space.

2. Pink accents go a long way.
Aren’t ready for a complete pink overhaul? Pink cushions on your sofa offer just the right amount of colour, and feel fun and fresh on a living room couch.

3. Pink flowers are the ultimate room pick-me-up.
Pink flowers make a great accent, particularly in an otherwise neutral space, but if you are not a flower person you can also use plants that have pink in their leaves. My personal favourite is using cherry blossom branches (when in season) for dramatic effect.

4. Go bold with a pink neon sign.
Every celebrity home these days—including the likes of Lauren Conrad and Kourtney Kardashian—seems to feature a modern neon sign. Make it the focal point of your living room, put it above your bed, or hang it in your kitchen—there’s really no wrong way to decorate with these guys.

5. Decorate with cool pink accessories.
Don’t be afraid to get creative when decorating with the colour pink! Source cool objects in the colour—from bamboo silk rugs to chandeliers, even lovely textured wall accessories such as Juju Hats.

6. Make pink the focal point of one room.
Got a neutral room that you’re looking to punch up? Try including light pink curtains. Or why not include a hammock. That's right a hammock! Pink can also be used to welcome guest to your home - with a pink front door. Well, why not!!

7. Mix and match different shades of pink.
You don’t have to stick to just one shade! Experiment mixing pastel pink, dusty pink, and even rose gold to come up with a totally unique room.

8. Dare to paint your walls pink.
Pink walls can make a statement or they can be super-calming, depending on the shade. To make a dining room or hallway pop, try a deeper hue, while very pale pink looks lovely in a bedroom, an office, or a bathroom.

9. Make your kitchen that much cooler with pink appliances.
One of the biggest kitchen decor trends right now? Retro appliances that come in pastel shades like mint green, baby blue, and pastel pink. It doesn’t get much more fun than a pink refrigerator.

10. Make a pink piece of art the focal point of your room.
Make a cool piece of pink art the focal point of a room in your home. You don’t even have to buy a piece of artwork to do this—paint a canvas pink, or frame a swatch of pink fabric.

So have some fun and add a pinch of pink into your home and watch it warm up and enhance your life!
