International Design Award 2021

We are thrilled to share the news that we’ve been awarded an International Design Award (IDA) Honourable Mention for our Sheng Wan interior design project.

IDA is one of the most respected, industry-recognised awards world-wide, so we’re incredibly excited to be acknowledged in this way.

The brief was to design a spacious, light-filled apartment with lots of storage. The space needed to serve two differing lifestyles – during the week it needed to be a functional work and entertainment space and on weekends it was to service family time with the children. The transition between the two needed to be seamless.

The first thing you notice as you enter the apartment is the curved doorways and joinery, supple interiors, and a five-way pastel colour palette. Reminiscent of the art-deco era, the lines, soft textures, and colours were chosen to contrast the building’s industrial foundation.

The lounge and dining room was divided with a breezeway wall that zoned the space. Velvet upholstered furniture and an original Atelier Lane rug zoned the living area, into an informal lounge, TV and reading room, opposite a dining area. Curved sunshine yellow cabinetry and lilac bulkheads created a sense of light and space.

The complete reconstruction of the kitchen and two bathrooms, and the extensive bespoke cabinetry, ensured these areas became flexible and functional. Every inch of storage space was utilised, without impacting the style.

The galley kitchen was transformed with custom cabinetry; glass fluted doors, trimmed in gold were used on the wall-mounted kitchen cupboards, a partial overlay with curved boarders and coated in mint green were used on the base cabinets. We chose a gold finish for the pantry and splashback, to contract the opposing, black-rimmed sliding doors and window frames. The structural beams were painted in lilac and the rear wall was painted in pink lemonade.

The main bathroom features floor-to-ceiling marble tiles, a free-standing bath and rain shower with noir fitting and sunshine yellow cabinetry. Pink basins atop marble benches, and brass tapware was used in both bathrooms.

The master bedroom features a yellow feature wall, that contrasts the starlight blue built-in storage, that frames the lilac bedhead. The study nook, with matching lilac chair, turns the space into a multi-functional room.

A unique feature of the apartment is the private outdoor terrace that overlooks Hong Kong. We transformed this area into an outdoor room, with a six-seat dining table, two outdoor lounges with coffee table, and a sweeping marble bench with four bar stools to take in the incredible view.

Considered design, refined textural furnishings, highlight lighting and colour combined to provide a sanctuary for this bustling city apartment, resulting in a distinct and highly stylised home.
